What is Veterinary Neurology?

Neurology specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Diseases affecting the nervous system include seizure disorders, disc herniation, spinal cord diseases, brain disorders (tumors, inflammatory diseases, infectious diseases and strokes), nerve and muscle diseases and balance (vestibular) disorders. Neurology starts with a general physical examination and an in-depth neurological examination. Specific diagnostic tests may then be performed to investigate the underlying cause of the neurologic problem.

Initial tests often include bloodwork, radiographs (x-rays), blood pressure and abdominal ultrasound. Advanced diagnostic techniques, such as MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), CT (computed tomography), spinal tap and electrodiagnostic testing may be necessary to determine the exact cause of the neurologic signs.

Once a diagnosis is made, various treatment options are discussed. Some neurologic diseases are treatable, while others are curable. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment options may include medical management at home, brain or spinal cord surgery, radiation therapy or injectable medications in the hospital. Many pets need long-term monitoring and care, which requires a good relationship between the pet owner, the family practitioner and the neurologist.
