Euthanasia and Bereavement

Eventually, many owners are faced with making life-or-death decisions for their pets. Such a decision may become necessary for the welfare of the pet and your family. Euthanasia is the procedure of ending an animal's life, in a painless way, for humane reasons.

The decision to "put a pet to sleep" is the hardest decision any caregiver will make. Although it is a personal decision, it doesn't need to be a solitary one. We understand the bond with your pet and can evaluate your pet's condition, estimate its chances for recovery, and discuss any potential disabilities, special needs and long-term challenges. We will outline the medical and surgical options as well as risks and possible outcomes. If you make the decision to euthanize, we will ensure a respectful, compassionate process that allows a pet to pass with dignity.

Bereavement Services

The loss of a pet can be a devastating event. We may feel that a pet is a member of the family, and the relationships between people and their pets may be very similar to the bond between a parent and a child - unconditional and unbreakable. So if you experience the loss of a pet, grief and sorrow are natural and expected responses. Grief is a very personal, complicated matter. People respond with an enormous range of emotions and reactions. Some people believe that, while the loss of a pet might be painful, it's "unhealthy" or an "over-reaction" to be so grief-stricken over an animal, especially if the feelings are prolonged. But this belief is mistaken. The reaction to the loss of a pet can be as devastating as the loss of a relative or friend. So everyone should view the loss of a pet as a serious matter. Don't be afraid to seek help or advice. We are always available to you and there are a number of excellent resources we also recommend:

  • The Association for Pet Loss
  • The Argus Institute at Colorado State University
  • Tufts Univerity Pet Loss Support Hotline
  • Cherished Keepsakes

  • Aftercare

There are a number of options for aftercare. Some owners may choose to have remains individually cremated. We've long developed a trusting relationship with a local after care service to ensure you receive the ashes of your own pet and no others. These are delivered directly, privately and courteously delivered to the hospital at which time we will call to inform you. Some individuals may prefer to arrange their own services. The Rainbow Bridge Crematorium, in Loveland, has several aftercare programs, including individual cremation and scattering ashes at sea. Ashes are placed in a cedar chest. For more information on their affordable services, please contact Rainbow Bridge Crematorium.
